International Trips with Homes of Hope

Article Dated : Wednesday, 04 Nov 2009 02:35

International Trips
We have partnerships with other Youth With A Mission Centers around the world that have adopted the same Homes of Hope program.  You will receive a similar experience as we offer here in Northern Baja.  We as San Diego/Baja Homes of Hope staff will host you in each location.   Each location will use slightly different building materials and design so it is appropriate to the spot they are in.  For example the wooden construction we use would be eaten up with the bugs you find in the DR.  However the group bases, full service feel to it should be the same.  They each will be a little different in length of time needed on the trip depending on the location and how long the build out takes.  These destinations are designed for those teams who have had experience with our Baja trips and are ready for the next level of complexity and challenge.

Mazatlan
YWAM in Mazatlan began 2007 and have built over 50 homes and have the system wired now.  They are in Mexico, on the coast. You will most likely stay in a hotel alongside the base.  Construction material used at this location is concrete slab, steel frame, steel doors and windows.  The build usually takes 3-4 days.  2 house build max at the same time. 20-25 people per house.
Jamaica
YWAM Jamaica began Homes of Hope in 2008.  This is a beautiful location, you typically stay on base with the YWAM Staff.  Quite hot most of the year round, very lush and green.  Often a mix of steel and block construction.  Add a few extra days in for seeing Jamaica after you have finished your build.  Available all round. The build usually takes 3-6 days depending if it is block.  (Block takes longer)  1 house build max per trip. 20-25 people max per team.
Dominican Republic (D.R.)
YWAM DR started Homes of Hope in 2009 out of Santa Domingo which is the capital of the DR.  This will be where you will build, in some of the poor locations in and around the city.  You will stay in hotels close to the base.  Construction can be either wood or steel and takes approx 3 days to build.  You can do a two house build at the same time with 20-25 people per house.  Available all year round.  Hot all year round, quite humid.
Haiti
The most challenged and poorest nation in our hemisphere. Haiti is an awesome location to build a home for a needy and deserving family if you and your team are prepared to flex a lot, prepared for tough conditions, and want to make a HUGE difference.   Apply with care on this one.
Rwanda
8 million people and over a million orphans since their genocide 15 years ago.  YWAM in Rwanda is clustering a widow and five orphans together in a Home of Hope.  This is a wonderful project but would be considered for the more committed teams we have.  If you consider your team experienced with international travel and able to take 2 weeks then this could be your choice.  Please note it take 2 days to fly there with airfare approx $3,000 each, 7-10 days on site with 2 days minimum to fly home.  You might want to put a few extra days in Europe if you choose to fly through Heathrow or Brussels.
