Homes of Hope - Selecting the families
One of our most frequently asked questions is how we select the families for whom we build. We have certain guidelines that we use to help make the selection.
- Land: The families we build for must have rights to their land; whether that means that they own it, or are making payments.
- Children: The family has children under the age of 18. Typically we look for families with 3 or more children, however exceptions are made depending on the level of hardship discovered.
- Income: We are looking for families who would not otherwise have means to build a home, and as such, we build for families who make less than $100 US per week.
- Living Conditions: We look at where the family is living now. Families who have an immediate need for shelter are given the highest preference.
- Special Circumstances: Families who may not meet all of the above criteria may still qualify due to special circumstances. A family with a higher level of income, for example, may still qualify, if one of the family members had a chronic medical condition that made the situation more difficult, or that was costly to treat.
It is very difficult to arrive at a family’s actual need using simple metrics as stated above, so we have dedicated staff who oversee an application process for everyone. Families come to our base of operations, to apply in person. One of our staff will visit their home to asses their situation, and investigate the validity of their claims. Then a committee meets, and based on prayer and the recommendations from the field staff, select the families for whom we will build.
