FAMILY STORY:

Jaime is 24 years old, he works in the fields and is from Oaxaca. Catalina is 28 years old and is also from Oaxaca. The family is also expecting a new baby in February 2018.

Catalina has had a hard life, she moved to Ensenada in 2001 with all her family from Oaxaca. She didn’t study because she has been working since she was 11 in the fields with her dad and brothers. She left her home when she was 18 years old and moved to San Quintin to pick up strawberries. With the money she earned she supported her mom. It was at this time that she had her first daughter but he abandoned her sometime later. After that, she met the father of her second kid, but he also abandoned her for another woman. Through all this time she kept supporting her mom. Catalina moved to La Paz looking for work and took her daughters with her. It was there that she met Jaime and they started to date. Catalina told Jaime about her children and about the problems she had had with their fathers and Jaime decided to take care of the children as if they were his.

Jaime's parents were living in Ensenada and the family decided to move with them for a time. There were three different families living in the same house, so as soon as they could make some money, Catalina and Jaime decided to move out and rent an apartment. In 2014 they bought a piece of land. They built a room with wood walls and a tarp for a roof. It’s not a safe place and they struggle with the weather, but it’s theirs and they are thankful for having their own place.

The desire of their hearts is to build a home in Ensenada; they don’t want to keep moving from place to place. They want a house where they can live, and raise their children in a place that feels like home.

Edgar and Michelle came to Ensenada looking for better work opportunities as Edgar didn’t study, so his possibilities to find a job in Tijuana were small. They moved to Ensenada where he could find a job working in the port. Sadly, he had an accident while working and couldn’t work for two years. He needed to have surgery, but he couldn’t get it on time, so he has permanent damage on his hand. From his previous job he only receives $600 pesos per month as a support (Around $35 USD) which is not enough for the family needs. Now that he has a handicap it has become even harder for him to get another job.

Their three children go to school, and this has been hard on the family as they normally struggle with the expenses for it, but Edgar wants their children to study so they have better opportunities than him. Sometimes they don’t even have money to buy food.

They live in a small wood room that’s in very bad shape, Edgar feels very bad about it because he desires to work to support his family and provide for them, but he can’t find any job and they don’t have the resources to build a safer place to live.

Edgar and Michelle really want a Home of Hope house for their family, as they wish to give their children a better and safer place where to live, a place they can really call home and a place where they can work together as a family to keep going.

FAMILY STORY:

The Chavez Isodoro Family

Teofilo is 33 years old and is from Puebla in the center of México. Cristina is 29 and she is from Ensenada. They have one child, Angel Isaac, who is one year old.

Cristina and Teofilo met in Rosarito, where Teofilo worked in a Taco stand and Cristina used to go to Rosarito often. They started a relationship and later got married.

Their son, Angel Isaac was born without his right ear, and he has to go to the doctor every 3 or 4 months to be evaluated to make sure that it is growing correctly. The doctors have told them that he can have corrective surgery to reconstruct his ear, but they still don’t know how much it will cost. They know that it’s probably going to be expensive, but they have to wait until Angel is 8 or 9 years old for him to be able to receive it.

Teofilo and Cristina have a property right behind the place they rent, but because of the expenses they have with Angel’s medical situation they have been unable to build a room or a place on it. To have their own home would mean a lot for the. On one hand they would be able to save the money they are using on the house they are renting, and on the other hand they would have their own place, a house that they can call their home and where they can raise a family.

They met when Jaqueline was having a hard time, she didn’t have money or a job and she used to have a property that she just had lost. Victor was selling chips on the streets in a small car and Jaqueline approach him to see if he would give her a free bag. Jaqueline explained to him her situation and Victor offered her a job helping him making and selling chips. They worked together for a time and started dating, Jaqueline never told Victor her real age. Time later Jaqueline got pregnant and Jaqueline moms went to talk to Victor and explain the whole situations and asked him to be responsible for the baby. Victor had already a property with a small room where he was living and Jaqueline moved in with him.

The room is very small, is made entirely of wood and a good portion of it is full with the equipment to make the chips they sell. They do and sell around 40 chips bags per day earning around $200 pesos per day, six days a week, for a total of around $1,200 pesos per week (Around 70 dlls.). The house doesn’t have electricity but it does have running water.

They want a Homes of Hope house to give her daughter a better place to live, this home represents for them a fresh start, a hope that everything is going to be fine and that they can overcome everything as a family.

The family lives in a small trailer which is insufficient for the 7 members of the family. Santiago is sick, he has gastritis and anemia. He constantly suffers from intense pain in his stomach which render him incapable of working. His wife Juana stays home taking care of her and the family. The only incomes they have come from Ana and Ernesto, the two older sons who work on the fields from Monday to Saturday. The money they earn is insufficient for the all their needs.

The trailer where they live is too small for them, it’s also not appropriate for the weather that can go from cold and wet to really hot and dry in the same day. They wish to have a real home where they can feel free and safe.
