FAMILY STORY:

Alexander and Dorisaba are from Chiapas a State in the far south of Mexico, and that's where they met. Dorisaba did not want to have a relationship with anyone, but circumstances brought her to go and live with Alexander because her sister was very mean to her. Dorisaba had fled to Puebla (a state next to Mexico City) because her sister hit her often, so Alexander suggested they live together. Their children were born in Chiapas.

Alexander couldn't find work and their children were often sick, so they decided to come to Ensenada. Dorisaba's Mother also lived in Ensenada, but she returned to Chiapas, as she kept getting sick because of the difference in climate. So the place where Alexander and Dorisaba live, is the room where the mother was living.

Dorisaba's brother helped with the property and is actually helping to pay it off. There are only two payments left to pay it off.

Alexander works in the field Monday to Saturday and if there is a lot of work, he works on Sunday as well.

It has been very difficult for them to build a little home or even a good room to live in because there is just not enough money to be able to do that, but they know that to receive a home would be God's blessing on their lives.

The family is also expecting a new baby in February 2018.

Catalina has had a hard life, she moved to Ensenada in 2001 with all her family from Oaxaca. She didn’t study because she has been working since she was 11 in the fields with her dad and brothers. She left her home when she was 18 years old and moved to San Quintin to pick up strawberries. With the money she earned she supported her mom. It was at this time that she had her first daughter but he abandoned her sometime later. After that, she met the father of her second kid, but he also abandoned her for another woman. Through all this time she kept supporting her mom. Catalina moved to La Paz looking for work and took her daughters with her. It was there that she met Jaime and they started to date. Catalina told Jaime about her children and about the problems she had had with their fathers and Jaime decided to take care of the children as if they were his.

Jaime's parents were living in Ensenada and the family decided to move with them for a time. There were three different families living in the same house, so as soon as they could make some money, Catalina and Jaime decided to move out and rent an apartment. In 2014 they bought a piece of land. They built a room with wood walls and a tarp for a roof. It’s not a safe place and they struggle with the weather, but it’s theirs and they are thankful for having their own place.

The desire of their hearts is to build a home in Ensenada; they don’t want to keep moving from place to place. They want a house where they can live, and raise their children in a place that feels like home.

Edgar and Michelle came to Ensenada looking for better work opportunities as Edgar didn’t study, so his possibilities to find a job in Tijuana were small. They moved to Ensenada where he could find a job working in the port. Sadly, he had an accident while working and couldn’t work for two years. He needed to have surgery, but he couldn’t get it on time, so he has permanent damage on his hand. From his previous job he only receives $600 pesos per month as a support (Around $35 USD) which is not enough for the family needs. Now that he has a handicap it has become even harder for him to get another job.

Their three children go to school, and this has been hard on the family as they normally struggle with the expenses for it, but Edgar wants their children to study so they have better opportunities than him. Sometimes they don’t even have money to buy food.

They live in a small wood room that’s in very bad shape, Edgar feels very bad about it because he desires to work to support his family and provide for them, but he can’t find any job and they don’t have the resources to build a safer place to live.

Edgar and Michelle really want a Home of Hope house for their family, as they wish to give their children a better and safer place where to live, a place they can really call home and a place where they can work together as a family to keep going.

Teofilo is 33 years old and is from Puebla in the center of México. Cristina is 29 and she is from Ensenada. They have one child, Angel Isaac, who is one year old.

Cristina and Teofilo met in Rosarito, where Teofilo worked in a Taco stand and Cristina used to go to Rosarito often. They started a relationship and later got married.

Their son, Angel Isaac was born without his right ear, and he has to go to the doctor every 3 or 4 months to be evaluated to make sure that it is growing correctly. The doctors have told them that he can have corrective surgery to reconstruct his ear, but they still don’t know how much it will cost. They know that it’s probably going to be expensive, but they have to wait until Angel is 8 or 9 years old for him to be able to receive it.

Teofilo and Cristina have a property right behind the place they rent, but because of the expenses they have with Angel’s medical situation they have been unable to build a room or a place on it. To have their own home would mean a lot for the. On one hand they would be able to save the money they are using on the house they are renting, and on the other hand they would have their own place, a house that they can call their home and where they can raise a family.

When they arrived to Ensenada they were renting an apartment for some time, but with a lot of hard work they were able to save enough money to give the first payment of a property. They built a small room with wood scraps, cardboard and tarp there and moved in to stop paying rent.

Florencio works in data capture in a vegetables company earning around $1,300 pesos per week (Around 74 dlls), which many times is not enough for the property payments plus the family needs. The property has no service, including water and electricity which means they pay extra to obtain them. Martha is not working right now as she decided to take care of her daughter and home.

Even with all the hardships they had face, they have been able to move on and they work hard every day on order to give their daughter the best they can. They hope that someday they can have a real home, a place where they can feel safe, where they can be rise her daughter and a place that make them feel like working hard really show results.
