They moved to Ensenada about fifteen years ago because in Guerrero because they didn't have many opportunities and good work was hard to come by. They have 8 children who range in age from 3 to 18. Bernardo and Margarita have had to work very hard to provide for their children. They have worked in the fields cutting vegetables and what little they earn has always gone to sustaining their family and home. For the last fifteen years, they have lived in rentals, moving from house to house. During those years it was hard because the children were all young and unable to help with their expenses, they didn't have enough money to buy land or any kind of house. Currently, the eldest two are working and helping their parents and with that help, they were able to buy land recently. But because of this, Ana and Angelica have not been able to continue studying. The family lives in a small room that they built with wood. Their situation is hard because they need a home for their children where they can grow and be safe and secure. Sadly, their resources are only enough to cover the expenses of food, shoes and clothing for the growing children, and everyday household expenses. It is very difficult for them to achieve a better life, but they have hope that one day they will have a safe place to call home.

David and Bernardina are originally from Oaxaca. They are a young family with a 3 yr old son. Like many other families, they came from the South looking for better opportunities and a better way of life. Down south, good work is hard to come by and education is not good. They came to Ensenada three years ago and have since been working in the fields ever since, planting and harvesting vegetables. During the first two years in Ensenada, they lived with family members, but the situation was not good for them. They need their own space to be a family. They decided to buy a piece of land on credit and they immediately built a small structure to live in. The structure they built out of plastic but the living conditions are so bad that it has made it unsafe for their young son. The salary that they earn working in the fields is not enough and it keeps them from providing a better home for their son. At such a young age, they both go out to work day after day with the hope that one day they will be able to live in a safe home.

Bertha is from Sonora and Manuel is from Chiapas, both different states in Mexico. They met in Ensenada in the Fields. Bertha was a single mother; she separated from the father of her children because he was addicted to drugs, so she decided to look for work to sustain her children. When she got together with Manuel they decided to buy some land with a loan and made a little room out of wood to live in.

Bertha works in the fields and depending on if there is work, she works every day, and Manuel washes cars.

It has been very hard for them to be able to build something stable as their children are in school. They continue to pay their loan, and basically, whatever they earn, they save to be able to make the payments on their land.

Every Saturday in the Evenings, Bertha gets the kids together from the community and takes them to the mountain and teaches them about the Bible, and for her, to have a home is a dream, because she says she will be able to teach the children outside her home.

Eusebio works and earns $54 USD approx. per week. Rocio works three times per week and earns $32 USD. The money they both earn together is not sufficient enough for them, as it needs to cover the kids' school fees, clothes, shoes, water, and electricity. Their needs are more than what they earn.

Yasmin's ex-husband is under military arrest in Mexico City, which is why she does not receive any child support from him, and it has been one year since she has had to work in a packaging center Monday through Saturday making min. $56 USD approx. per week. Yasmin has to administer that amount to buy food, clothes, and water, and sometimes it's not enough, on top of that the kids are growing and they are living in a trailer that is being loaned to them.

There is also another family living with them, a mother, Teresa Guadalupe, who also has three children. They are Yasmin's friends and have been Christians for five years. The reason they live with Yasmin and her family is that when they met, they were having the same type of abuse and they supported each other. They have been living together with both families in the same place now for a year.

It is Yasmin's desire to be able to have a safe home for her children to be able to offer them a place of which they can be proud. About a year and a half ago, they were robbed in their little place, and since then, her prayers have been that they could live in a safe place.

Badison is not living with them right now, he lives in a Christian orphanage. They had to do this because they were at risk of losing their son to the government.

Homes of hope represent their hope, the hope of having a bigger and safer place for their kids, but also the hope of being a family, together again.

FAMILY STORY:

José Andrés is 21, and Josefina is 36 years. They came from Zacatecas a state close to the center of México. They have two children, Yovani who is 11 years old and is in 5th grade,  and Josefina just had their second child recently.

 Josefina was married before, but she separated because the father of their son didn’t help in the house at all. She met José Andrés a little while after because he lived close to her family's house. They started a relationship and started to live together. They had difficulties finding a job, so they decided to move to Ensenada. Josefina’s parents have been living in Ensenada for a few years and they thought it was a good idea to move with them.

Sometime later they decided to buy a property with a loan, which they are still paying. They built a small room with wood scraps and moved in. Josefina is not working and stays home with her son. José works as a packer earning 1,200 pesos per week (Around $65 USD). They don’t have the resources to build a better place.
