The house they live is in really bad shape as it is barely standing and can’t really protect them from rain or cold.

Their current living conditions are very difficult because they have to eat and sleep in a small plastic room, making sure their kids do not get sick. Their desire is to have a home that is safe and where they can live without any fear of being cold, or dealing with getting wet during the rainy season. They have been praying to God for a house and and their dream is that one day they will.

Three months after returning home, her parents gave her permission to return to Ensenada and Nayeli surprised Fabian. At this time, Nayeli found out she was pregnant with Fabian's child. They were both living in a rented room when they brought their daughter home. When their daughter was 8 months old, Nayeli was once again pregnant. It was at that time that they decided to get a piece of land and build their own home to live in. They continue to pay off the land, the montly payment being approx. $58. They had a rough start, and struggled to build a home. They were given the wood from a lady who was moving back to Oaxaca and had tore down her house. Their second daughter was born and Nayeli had to stay home to care for her two young girls. Fabian works as a chauffeur for a company delivering produce, earning approx. $70 a week while working 6-7 days a week. During those years it was hard because the children were all young and unable to help with their expenses, they didn't have enough money to buy land or any kind of house. Currently, the eldest two are working and helping their parents and with that help, they were able to buy land recently. But because of this, Ana and Angelica have not been able to continue studying. The family lives in a small room that they built with wood. Their situation is hard because they need a home for their children where they can grow and be safe and secure. Sadly, their resources are only enough to cover the expenses of food, shoes and clothing for the growing children, and everyday household expenses. It is very difficult for them to achieve a better life, but they have hope that one day they will have a safe place to call home.

FAMILY STORY:

David and Bernardina are originally from Oaxaca. They are a young family with a 3 yr old son. Like many other families, they came from the South looking for better opportunities and a better way of life. Down south, good work is hard to come by and education is not good. They came to Ensenada three years ago and have since been working in the fields ever since, planting and harvesting vegetables. During the first two years in Ensenada, they lived with family members, but the situation was not good for them. They need their own space to be a family. They decided to buy a piece of land on credit and they immediately built a small structure to live in. The structure they built out of plastic but the living conditions are so bad that it has made it unsafe for their young son. The salary that they earn working in the fields is not enough and it keeps them from providing a better home for their son. At such a young age, they both go out to work day after day with the hope that one day they will be able to live in a safe home.

FAMILY STORY:

Eleutario and Petra are originally from Oaxaca, a state in the South of Mexico. They decided to move to Ensenada 17 years ago because there were no jobs available in Oaxaca. They have six children of which all go to school and one also has a job.

Eleutario works in the fields earning $43 USD a week, and Petra stays at home to take care of her children and their home. 

They live in a room made of tarp and a dirt floor and so they want to live better and have a house which will fulfill their dreams of having a worthy home for their family.
