Letter from the family:

My name is Susana Sanches, my children are Victor (12 years old) and Jesus (11 years old) and my partner Ecliserio. We live in Ejido Lázaro Cárdenas.

We’ve lived in Tijuana for 10 years, and are originally from the state of Guerrero. We came here looking for better job opportunities. In 2019 we decided it was time to have something of our own, and that’s how we acquired the land. It was quite complicated as my husband’s earnings went towards the household items and food, and to pay the rent. That’s actually how we ended up starting a small business where I made bread, and from there also learned to make cakes. From doing that I earned what was needed to pay for the land, and to also help my husband a little with the other costs we had.

All was going well, thanks to God, but in February of 2021 my husband had an accident at work. He worked taking apart pieces at a scrap yard. He was carrying a motor which caused a disc to slip in his back. It was a complete 360 turn for us, as his job did not offer health insurance and he was bed ridden for about 4 months, unable to move. After this time, he started to recover but was still unable to return to his job at the scrap yard. Of course we did not receive any support from his boss, he was only offered his job back. But per medical recommendation and the pain he consistently experienced, he was unable to return to any heavy labor work indefinitely. In September of the same year, the owners of the house we rented gave us a one month notice to move out, and I was very worried because I was the one who solely carried all of the financial responsibility at that time. I worried about finding another house to rent, and I looked for one, but they were way too expensive. At that point we connected with an old boss of my husbands to ask for a loan to build a house on our land, or at least a room. To my surprise, instead of offering us a loan, he offered to lend us a van. It was one of those school type vans or buses for transporting people that if you took the seats out, it made it habitable. The only thing left was to get it to the property, which my husband’s old boss offered to help with by using his crane. That way we would have a place to live and not be in debt.

Thanks be to God, that worked well for us, but come winter time we changed location as it was too cold for mainly my children, but also us, as the material the bus is made of is not good for the cold months. Still, we are thankful to God to be on our property and to have a place to live. Currently my husband and I both work for my business, well, now “our” business, as it’s now both of us that work in the business. And it’s because of all of that, I am sending this request for a house. Firstly, because the van we have has only been lent to us, without a definitive time frame, but still it is lent. Secondly, as I mentioned previously, my husband can no longer work and because of that we have just one income, although I do as much as I can. Thirdly, although right now it’s not as cold, in the winter I would love for my children and myself to be able to sleep protected from the cold.
