LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:

Dear Homes of Hope team,

My name is Laura. In 2008, I was in the third year of middle school. My parents were working, and I was responsible for managing the house and caring for my two younger sisters. That same year, I met the man who is now my husband. He was 30 years old, and I was 15. We became friends, and after I finished school, my parents decided I should stop studying to take care of the home and my siblings full-time. I did so for several months, but the responsibility was overwhelming. In November, I began a relationship with my now-husband. Then, in December, I made the biggest decision of my life: I left my home. On December 20th, a rainy morning at 5 a.m., I walked away with a change of clothes and never returned. When he found out, he came looking for me. We talked and decided to stay together. Four months later, I became pregnant with our first daughter, Danna Caroll, who was born on October 5th, 2009. In 2011, we moved for the third time, to a house that belonged to my uncle. However, after he passed away, another woman claimed ownership of the property, and since then, it has been a constant struggle. In 2016, we were finally able to save enough to make a down payment on a piece of land. In 2017, I became pregnant with our second daughter, Camila. Over the years, the supposed owner of the house has harassed us, sent lawyers, and looked for ways to evict us. During the COVID pandemic, we nearly gave up, but instead, we decided to start a small metalworking business together. We’ve faced many ups and downs—especially due to her ongoing threats—but we’ve kept going. When I saw the Homes of Hope video, my heart leapt. I hesitated to reach out, afraid things would go wrong again. But I’m hoping we can achieve our dream: to live in a home of our own, in peace and security, where our daughters can grow up happy. We’ve been together for 17 years and we want to keep building our life as a family. I trust in God that you will be able to help us. Thank you very much.
