LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:
Dear Homes of Hope, I am a single mother of one son. My son has my last names because his father chose not to take responsibility for him. For the past five years, we have lived on our own land together with my mother, who came to live with us after one of my brothers passed away in a car accident. His loss was very painful for our family, and my mother went through a period of depression, so since then we have remained together, supporting and caring for one another as a family. When we first moved onto our land, we had practically nothing. However, God opened a door in a way we never expected: some neighbors gave us garage doors, and with those and a few other materials, we took the chance of building a small, makeshift room out of sheet metal. We built it ourselves with the little we had and without any knowledge of construction. Our room has no windows, so during hot days the temperature inside can become unbearable. The original roof has already deteriorated, and when it rains, water comes inside. We know our small structure has many limitations, but we did the best we could with the resources available to us so that we would have somewhere to shelter. I previously worked at a factory, but it closed and I lost my job. Since then, I have looked for ways to continue earning an income. Thank God, I have a sewing machine and am able to do simple sewing work. People at my church also know that I sew and often ask me to make clothing alterations, which helps me earn some income to cover our needs. Five years ago, we arrived on this land without a house and built the best shelter we could with what others placed in our hands. Today, my desire is for that same piece of land to become a true home for my son, my mother, and me—a place where we can be protected from the heat and rain and continue caring for one another. We sincerely appreciate the time you take to learn about and consider our situation.
