LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:
Dear Homes of Hope, throughout our life as a family, we have faced many hardships that have made it difficult to provide stability for our son, Cristian. So far, we have lived in four different homes, which has also meant three school changes for him. As parents, it is painful to know that he has had to adjust so many times to new homes, schools, and surroundings. At first, we lived with his grandmother, but when my father-in-law began struggling with addiction, we felt that the environment was no longer safe for our son, so we decided to leave. We then moved into a small room. Although we had our own space, the neighborhood was dangerous. One night, unexpectedly, someone set fire to the place where we were renting. Two other couples lived in the other rooms, and we never had any problems with them. To this day, we do not know why the fire happened, but after that experience, we decided it was best to move somewhere else. We eventually arrived at what Cristian called the “gray house.” He liked giving each house a color as a name, and because this particular house had very little light and was somewhat hidden, he called it the gray house. At that time, he was in kindergarten and had difficulty adjusting to his new school. My husband and I were both working to support our family, but unexpectedly, I was dismissed from my job. Wanting to earn an income as quickly as possible, I accepted another job without fully knowing the working conditions. I did not have health insurance or benefits, and after only one week, I broke my right foot and could no longer continue working. My husband also had to leave his job so he could help me and take me to the hospital. With very little income, we began selling different things online in an effort to cover our expenses, but what we earned was not enough to pay the rent, and eventually we had to leave that home as well. An aunt welcomed us into her home in Rosarito, where we currently live with other relatives. There are ten people sharing the same home, so the limited space and daily living situation are not easy. After so many moves, we realized that we needed to do everything possible to give Cristian greater stability in the future. For this reason, we made the effort to acquire a piece of land of our own. Our family has also recently grown with the arrival of our new baby, making our desire for a place of our own even more important. After so many houses and so many changes, we dream that the next house Cristian gets to name will be the one we will never have to leave: our own home. We are very grateful for the opportunity to be part of this process; for our family, being able to move closer to that dream means more than we can express.
