LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:
Dear Homes of Hope, my name is Mirella, and I am originally from a small town in the state of Michoacán. For many years, I worked hard to provide for my family by selling atole, tamales, and barley drinks alongside my daughters in the streets of our community. After finishing our sales each day, I would take them to school, always hoping to give them a better future. Seeking greater opportunities, my husband moved to Tijuana, where his mother lived. Although some of his relatives encouraged him to leave us behind, he remained committed to our family, worked diligently, and eventually saved enough money to bring us to live with him. One of our daughters, who was already an adult, chose to remain in Michoacán. When we arrived in Tijuana, we stayed with my brother-in-law, and shortly afterward I found a night shift job at a factory. However, the demanding schedule and lack of adequate rest made it impossible for me to continue. Later, my brother-in-law helped us with the down payment on a piece of land, allowing us to begin building a small wooden room using donated materials. Our neighbors also generously contributed supplies, making it possible for us to establish a place to live, and I was able to return to work. I spent several years working at a tortilla factory until I was diagnosed with diabetes. Because of my health, I decided to leave my job and dedicate myself to caring for our children. I now take them to school and support them in their daily activities, especially my son, who loves playing soccer. Today, my husband is the only income provider for our family. Although he works very hard, our income is only enough to cover our basic needs, making it extremely difficult to improve our home. Our greatest wish is to provide our children with a safe, stable, and dignified place to live where they can grow up with better opportunities.
