The children also work in the fields on weekends, to earn some money for the expenses of the buses. They also work in the vacations. They have never had their own home. They lived in the home of Tiburcio's parents, but they bought some land that is only about 100 meteres from the home of Tiburcio's parents. Tiburcio built a small room and there they have lived for the last 7 months. The room is very small, so the older children continue to sleep at their grandparents house, as there is not enough room for everyone. For Tiburcio it is difficult to build a better home because they have many children and many expenses as a family.

His brother received a home from YWAM, so he donated his old home to Horacio and his family. This is where they currently live. They have 3 children, aged 14,10 and 2. Here Horacio is working in a factory and Maria looks after the kids. The house they are living in is very small, 10 feet by 10 feet and is in bad conditions - the walls have hols, the floor is dirt and the roof is a tarp. The owner of the house sold them a piece of his land where the house is; they only owe 5000 pesos ($345) and it is theirs. They pay 1000 pesos ($69) a month in rent, but are very excited to not have to pay rent and have a place that is a home of their own. They will finally be able to pay off their land!

The house where they live is in very bad conditions, but they have decided to stay there all this time because it is very close to where Manuel works. Maria also works to help with their expenses, she works every day in the mornings for 4 hours at the same fishery where Manuel works. In the afternoons, Maria is with the children. Yajaira, the oldest, is a single mom. Her son is Victor, who is 4 years old. Yajaira doesn't work because she stays home to care for her son and the others while her parents are working.

Erika is a single mother who has suffered a lot but has been able to overcome those difficult situations. She comes from a family where there had been a lot of abuse. At the age of 20, she became pregnant by her then boyfriend, but he didn't want to take responsibility for it and ended the relationship. She was left alone with her oldest, Fernanda. She was living with her father on a ranch and for a time, had been working as a maid cleaning someone's house.  During that time, she met another man and went to live with him in a free union and became pregnant again.

Erika never felt loved and accepted by the father's family and they had many problems, including the father not wanting to work, so they separated. She later met Pedro, her third "husband" which she thought would be the last and that they'd be together for life; Erika was happy and everything seemed to be going really well. But after almost four years together, he left leaving only a note for her that said he left because he couldn't stay with her and all the responsibilities with the 2 children that weren't his biological kids.

For a third time, Erika found herself alone with the responsibility of two children to care for. Sometimes one of the men send her 300 pesos ($20 apx.) for food. Erika lives next to her father who also tries to help her out and giver her moral support. Erika works selling secondhand clothes and has no set income to rely on. She works three days a week and makes around $40.

She is paying off her land that a friend sold to her, which has allowed her to be able to pay whatever she can when she can as long as she pays $35 each month. Erika and the kids live in a very small house that is made of pieces of scrap wood and tarps/canvas. For her it is very difficult to build herself a home.

Their father is in jail because he was accused of sexually abusing the two oldest, Carlos and Miriam. Their father started to be physically abusive of Carlos as well, and that is when he confessed to his mother that their father had been touching them inappropriately. Yolanda immediately turned him in and he was then imprisoned. Their father is still in prison, but he has a brother involved in gangs who sent them a message threatening to kill Yolanda for putting his brother in jail.

Joel and Yolanda had to leave and they came here to Ensenada where they didn't know anyone, without any money, and without telling any relatives where they are. Joel is doing what he can to protect Yolanda and the children. When they arrived in Ensenada, they asked a church to house them, then lived with neighbors, and lastly, found an abandoned house without any doors. They cleaned up the house and moved in. When the owner of the house showed up, they were able to come to an agreement that allowed them to stay but look for their own place. They bought a piece of land on credit close to where they had been living and Joel built a small place for them on the land with old pieces of wood and scrap plywood, and a tarp to use as the roof.

They have lived there for the past three months. Joel works in construction and is hired by contract. When he has no job, he goes and works in the fields. Yolanda also works in the fields when there is work in order for them to have more income to use to make the land payments each month. The income they make from working in the fields is barely enough to cover land payments, food and basic living expenses.

Note: The children do not know that Yolanda told HOH about the sexual abuse that happened.

His salary is very unstable and earns around $50 a week, but it can be more or less. Johana isn't working because she is studying to finish high school. Their son is taken care of by his grandma. Johana and Alvaro do not have the means to be able to build themselves a better home.

He earns around $62 dollars a week, sometimes they ask him to work overtime and he earns a bit more, but even then it's hard for them to make ends meet.

Apart from the fact that it would be too small for all of them. They were so excited to hear that they'll be receiving a new home soon. 

The tried to move the trailer to prepare the property to poor the foundation for the new house, but it was very old and fell apart. They had to take it apart and were able to sell the steel parts at a recycling plant, they used the proceeds to level the property for the construction.

Lucia prefers not to work as her daughter is very young and she wants to stay home to look after her. However, some weeks she needs to go and work in the fields 2 days a week to help cover the cost of food. 

For Gabino it's very hard to build a better house as they barely make enough to cover the property payments and food expenses.

Santiago and Zenaida have never owned their own home and were always moving from one place to another.

One and a half years ago they began to make payments on a piece of land because they were tired of renting in different places. Santiago has been losing his vision little by little and he doesn't get work very easily and they weren't making enough money to continue renting and making the land payments, so they had to move to their land. However they could, they built a small place there for them to live with used plywood sheets. They have lived there for 4 years now.

Twenty years ago, Santiago was run over by a car and in a coma for 3 months. He continues to struggle with pain in his head an leg, and has actually lost sight in one eye while losing some in the other. The only place he can work is in the fields, but sometimes he doesn't work because he is in so much pain. He then helps his wife to make and sell flour tortillas. This family makes very little money and is unable to build themselves a better home.

Leonarda is an indigenous Mixteco. She speaks Spanish, but her native tongue is Mixteco. Leonarda is a single mother; she was living with the father of her son, but then found out he was already married to another woman when he left her to go back to his wife. Leonarda was left alone and pregnant and the man didn't care and wasn't going to be responsible for the child. This changed Leonarda's life completely; she is an orphan with no siblings and at the time, had no family living in Ensenada. Because she was pregnant, she lost her job and had nothing.

A cousin found out about all that Leonarda was going through and came to Ensenada to help her. They live together and Valentina is helping her out. Leonarda and Valentina work in the fields. Leonarda is allowed to bring her son with her, which has kept her from needing to find and pay a nanny to care for him every day. Leonarda and her cousin were living in a rental house very close to where Leonarda had a piece of land.

Last October they decided to move to the land instead of paying rent and land payments, in hopes of saving the rent money. But in December/January when the rainy season started, the house wasn't in conditions to withstand the weather and leaked a lot. The house was made of only wood beams covered in plastic and tarps. They had to go back to renting the same house as before, until the rainy season passed. They have now moved back to their land and have been there for at least a month. Family Story:

Rigoberto and Ana have been married for 5 years and for the first time they have their own property. When they got married, they lived with Ana's mother, rented a house for a while, and for 2 other years they lived with Rigoberto's parents. While living with Rigoberto's family, they were faced with a lot of problems because in that same house there were 4 families living together, they fought with each other all the time.

Because of this, Rigoberto decided to get his family their own place and move out. They bought a small trailer for $482 (they still owe $206 on it), and have lived in it for 7 months now. The trailer is very old and leaks so they had to lay a tarp over the roof.

Rigoberto works in the fields and makes around $62 a weeks. This is used to pay for their food, expenses, land payments, trailer payments, etc. Basically leaving them with nothing to be able to build a home.

Family Story:

Roberto and Antonia met here in Ensenada and went to Oaxaca where Antonia is from and got married there.

When they moved back to Ensenada, they rented a home for a year until Roberto found a piece of land which they bought on credit and then built a small place with old wood, plastic and tarps. They have lived here for 3 years. They didn't have a floor so the government helped them out by providing a very thin concrete which has broken and started to fall apart over the past 3 years.

Roberto and Antonia decided to both work in order to be able to make the land payments and get it paid off. Antonia got pregnant and they would have nobody to care for their son if she were to continue to work. So now Roberto is the only one who works and his salary is all they have to cover all their expenses and the land payments. He works packaging vegetables from the fields and only makes $50 a week. Because his salary is so little, they haven't been able to make their home better.
