Where they are from in South Mexico lacks work, education and good health services. They have four children; Rosalba who is 4 years old, Marisol who is 6 and just began 1st grade, Eduardo who is 8 years old and in 4th grade, and then Lorena who is 10 and about to finish elementary school. Agustin works in the fields and earns 1080 pesos a week. His salary is used to pay for their basic necessities such as clothes, food, hygiene, school, etc. Most of the time his salary isn't enough for all their needs, but one way or another they look for ways to provide for their family and push them forward.  Lucia doesn't work because she dedicates her time to caring for the children and their home. Their current house is a small room made from scrap wood and covered with plastic. Their lack of resources has kept them from being able to have a better home because their priority is to make sure they can cover the basic needs of the family. Even through all of their struggles, they have been able to obtain a piece of land and are close to having it paid off. Through faith they have believed that one day they would be able to have a proper home that is worthy for their children to grow up in.

She also suffers from epilepsy which has been difficult for her and her ability to work.

When she moved to Ensenada she rented a house but moved in and out of different places because of her low income.  Later she decided to buy property because it was getting hard for her and her family to be moving from place to place. Bertha and Santos asked for a loan in the bank to build the small room they live in today. The house is made out of wood but is deteriorating because of all the rain.  They’re asking for a house because their children need their own space and it gets really cold during winter time in the place they’re currently living in.  Santos can’t build a better place for them due to his low income and the daily expenses and payments they need to make.  Bertha hopes that her newborn won’t have to go through the winter in their current house.

Cindy comes from a broken home where she suffered a lot growing up.  Her mom was constantly physically abused by her husband (Cindi’s stepfather) and this would make Cindi fall into depression.  After some time, Cindi’s mother left her husband but fell into a depressive state also and didn’t want to work.  So Cindi had to leave her studies and started working to provide for herself and her little sister.

  Later, they went to live with her grandmother because the house they were living at was an abandoned house.  A little time went by and Cindi meets Adolfo and gets together with him 3 months later because she didn’t want to live with her mother any longer.

   From there, Adolfo and Cindi move in and out of friend’s houses because they couldn’t pay rent.  Finally, 8 months later they were able to pay the first part of a small property they’re buying.    Adolfo works selling juice and their income barely gets them through the day.  Cindy would love a new house so that their children won’t have to go through the same things she had to go through.

When it rains, water enters the house through the roof.  Miriam and her family need a new house so that her kids can grow up in an actual house where they won’t have to worry about the water situation which causes the children to be sick.

Leobardo and Elvira are both from Michoacán.  They’ve been living in Ensenada for about 5 years and have 2 kids: Edith and Abel.  Abel lives in Michoacán by choice with his grandmother. 

Before they bought the property they live in today, they rented a house in Maneadero.  They later heard of Homes of Hope and decided to buy the property and apply for a house.  They have a small room made out of some wood that they bought with a loan of $20,000 pesos, or about $1200, which they have to be paying monthly.  The room has no electricity so every night they have to light a candle so that Edith can do her homework. 

Leobardo works in the cleaning department of a recreational center.  Elvira doesn’t work because she stays back home taking care of Edith.  Abel wants to come live with his family but in the meantime he can’t as there isn't enough space for him in the small wooden room they call a home. Abel is also not used to being around his family because he has lived with his grandmother for the past 15 years and it would be a major to shock to move in with them now with things the way for them.

Cecilia was born in Ensenada but her parents are originally from Oaxaca.  She met her husband Domingo at her job.  Domingo was born in Oaxaca but when he was 5 years old his family moved to Ensenada in need of better jobs and a better way of life.  Cecilia and Domingo started dating, got married, and went to live with Domingo’s parents.  They also have a daughter who is almost 3 years old.

They purchased a property in payments with help from Cecilia’s family.  The property is paid for but they still owe Cecilia’s family because they borrowed money to pay for the property.  The property cost them 27,000 pesos, or approx. $1600 dollars, and now they’ve built a small room with some wood that Domingo’s brother gave them. 

They both work in the field. They get paid 160 pesos a day, or about $9.  Cecilia works 3 days a week while Domingo works 5.  Every work day, Cecilia drops her daughter off at her mom’s house so she can go to work. 

They haven’t been able to build anything because of their debt with Cecilia’s family.

Luis and Veronica met where they worked and one day decided they wanted to start a relationship. They were renting a place to live and were paying $800pesos ($47 appx. USD) A while after the birth of their first child, when Derian was 1 year old and Veronica was newly pregnant, they decided to move to another place that was cheaper, because they already didn’t earn enough money to cover all their expenses. They went to live in a small trailer where they paid $500pesos ($30 appx. USD) a month. They tarted looking for a piece of land to buy, found one, and began to make payments on it. They didn’t move there right away because the area had no one living close to where their land is and they felt it was not safe to live there alone with their 2 children.

A few months ago they began to live on the land in a house made of pallets that Luis got as a gift from his employer. The inside of the house is lined with the cardboard that comes with the pallets.

This family is very much in need of a home and wanting to provide a better life for their children.

They went to live with Oscar’s parents for 2 months, then moved in with Claudia’s parents for 3 years, where their daughter, Sofia, was born.

Claudia and Oscar wanted to buy their own property and live in another place to a have better life for their children. They found a man who was beginning to sell his land and they were excited and bought the land from him on credit, which they are still paying off today. They have lived there for only a few months and have not been able to build something better because their salary is not enough to buy the necessary materials. They have had many expenses with their daughter and are expecting a second.

They need a house because their daughter gets sick when it rains. When it is hot, their house gets very hot inside because it is made of tarps. They also just want to live better and provide something better for their children.

Family Story:

Beatriz and Sergio met here in Ensenada. They have 3 children together. Eleven years ago, some of Beatriz' family received a home from an organization. Some years later, Sergio and Beatriz were wanting to buy a piece of land on credit. Beatriz' grandma transferred the land with the house over to Beatriz and Beatriz and Sergio finished paying it off. They have finished paying it off and it is theirs, both the land and the small house. The house is very small with only one room for the kitchen/living space and one for the bedroom where all 5 of them sleep. Five years ago, their oldest son Geovanni was diagnosed with cancer in the stomach. As parents, it was very difficult for them to see their son go through this. There was also a lot of costs involved with different analysis and medications for Geovanni. Geovanni was hospitalized for a year and a half. After that, the doctors said that he was getting better. Geovanni never lost his hair. The cancer disappeared and a miracle happened in his body. The doctors couldn't understand it. Beatriz had never lost faith and had always asked God for a miracle for her son. Since then,  Geovanni hasn't had to take any more medication. Every 3 months he goes to Tijuana for blood analysis and tests. Every 6 months a biopsy is done. Sergio works doing construction and labor work, earning about $68 a week. That salary hasn't been enough for them to build onto the house they live in. Especially not with having to make trips to Tijuana so often. Beatriz and her children attend Circulo Andante, which is a ministry the YWAM base has every Tuesday where they teach children. Beatriz attends the Bible study for the mothers. Beatriz is very happy about what God has done in the life of Geovanni. In spite of their situations and what they've been through, they haven't lost their faith that one day they will have a better home for their family.

Family Story:

Armando and Eloina are originally from Oaxaca. They came to Ensenada over 23 years ago, looking for better work opportunities. They worked in the fields, worked at different ranches that offered them a place to stay with other ranch hands. Only people who have no other place to live choose to live on the ranch because the way of life offered to them is very hard. They lived in these conditions for years before renting a room of their own. Finally in June of 2015 they were able to get a piece of land and move to their own place. They are still paying off their land, monthly payments are about $62. Armando and Eloina had 5 children, one of them died when he was only 8 months old. Rene and Jose Armando are the oldest and moved back to Oaxaca to be with Eloina's family when her father got sick. He passed away, but they decied to stay in Oaxaca and are both married now with their own families. With them live Emmanuel and Luis Fidel. Emmanuel was born without fingers on one of his hands and suffers from hemoglobin hemorrhage. Their home is a small wood house with a tarp roof and dirt floor. Armando is the only one who works. Emmanuel is currently on medication and is regularly taken to the hospital to get his levels checked.
