Marcelo and Maria, along with their 3 children, are a family that have been in many different living situations; from renting to living in homes lent to them, and now the small one room house they live in made from tarps. When she decided to leave her husband she started paying for the property where currently live in a trailer she bought for them. Being a single, working mother of 3 children, she is not able to build or buy a proper house for her family.

Epifanio and Natalia are from Oaxaca. They came to Baja quite a few years ago. One of the Selerino, is married and has 2 children. Selerino helps his father with the land and because of his fathers recent struggle with diabetes, he has been helping support the rest of the family so that Epifanio can focus on his health. They have a room that they built our of cardboard, wood and tarps. Their land doesn't have electricity or running water, but a neighbor 3 houses down is able to pass water to them when they need it. They have been living on their land now for 10 months. Recently, Epifanio has been unable to work due to his diabetes. He used to work for a ranch doing random labor work, but had to quit because he got very sick. For them to receive a home would be a huge blessing as they have been unable to do so for themselves.

Jaime and Lisbeth have a little 1-year-old girl called Kendra.  This small family has gone through some difficult times.  When they first got married and had Kendra, Jaime was the only one working and they could barely pay their rent. With time, they were able to start buying a property and there they have built a small room.  They have no running water or electricity on their property. It has been impossible for them to build a proper house on their low income and all the monthly expenses they have with a baby. It’s been especially hard on Lisbeth recently because she has had to leave her young daughter with her mother in law in so that she can go to work and help provide for her family. Jaime has been diagnosed with a cyst in his prostate and needs to have surgery.  Because of this, he has lost a lot of weight and gets sick frequently. But even with all these things going on around them, the family stands firm with the hope that they will be receiving a home.

Life’s been hard for them but that hasn’t been a reason for them to stop dreaming of a place where they can feel safe and live without fear.

Nieves is from Oaxaca.  She moved to Ensenada and got together with a man who is the father of her three children.  More than a year ago she left the man because he had been abusing her and her children and was with another woman. Failing to find a place to live in, Nieves moved in with her mother for a year until she finally found a property which she’s currently paying off. Nieves works on the field cutting vegetables from Monday to Saturday.  The little she earns she uses it for her family’s basic needs. Sometimes the money is not enough to cover all their expenses and make the land payment. The room that Nieves and her kids live in is made out of pieces of cardboard covered with tarps to try to keep the kids from getting sick.  They children all sleep on the only bed they have, while Nieves sleeps on the floor.  Their desire is to have a proper home where they could live safe and comfortably as a family.

They even had plans to get married until the man tried to abuse Sonia’s daughter.  For that reason, they broke things off.  Finally, Sonia met a responsible man, Jorge. He was a good man and she admired how good he was with her girls.  They decided to date and eventually got together.  Sonia is not working anymore because she’s taking care of her children while Jorge is taking care of the family economically speaking.  They’re living in a trailer right now because their income is very low and they’re hoping to get something better.

She had to come to Ensenada because back in Guadalajara they couldn’t earn enough to be able to take care of her entire family.  Her husband works for an employer that only employs men, so for this reason it was easy for him to just stay back with their oldest children and keep that job in Guadalajara while Consuelo came to Ensenada with the 6 younger children. Consuelo has to work hard for her to send her kids to school and feed them.  She has a really low income but thanks to God she has been able to build a home.  They’re still hoping to get something better eventually.

   Zoila and Ubaldo met each other when they were kids back in Oaxaca where they are both from.  Zoila’s family would have to wash their clothes at Ubaldo’s house because there was a drought in the area where they lived. They fell in love and 2 years ago got married and began a family while there in Oaxaca.  They later decided to move to Ensenada because the economy was very bad back where they lived. Ubaldo started working in the fields and his sister offered his family to stay at her place, but after a while they started having problems and had to move out.  They then rented a room but the owner of the room raised the rent every time they had to pay.  Finally, after they both worked hard, they were able to buy a property with monthly payments.  An engineer friend of theirs helped them out with materials for them to build a room.  Every time that friend could visit, he would, and always tried to help out around as much as he could. Candelina, their youngest daughter, started getting really high body temperature and started to have seizures.  They took her to the pediatrician regularly for over 6 months and their engineer friend was always there helping.  But thanks to God Candelina is fine now.

Ismael and Gertruidies met while working the fields together and a year later decided to move in together.  They were first renting a small room but after their first baby was born they decided to get 2 jobs while Gertruidies’s sister took care of the baby for them to be able to buy a property.  They finally earned enough to apply for a loan and when they moved in Gertruidies decided not to work anymore and take care of the house.  Ismael’s cousin lent them a trailer so they could move on the property and that’s where they’re currently living. Ismael works on the field cutting tomatoes from Monday through Friday.  Because they’re paying the loan for the property they don’t have enough money to build a better house.
