LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:
Dear Homes of Hope team, I was born in Puebla, and my childhood was filled with hardships and unmet needs. My father worked, but he struggled with alcoholism, so there was never enough money. I honestly do not know how my mother managed to provide for my sister and me. When I was fifteen years old, my mother decided to leave my father, and with the help of an uncle we moved to Tijuana. Since there was no one to support us financially, I was only able to study through middle school before I had to start working. My uncle’s wife was uncomfortable with us living there, so we moved out and began renting a small place. I was so excited because we were finally moving forward on our own, and I remembered a dream I had as a little girl—to one day buy my mother a house. Around that time, I met the father of my son. I became pregnant, we moved in together, but the relationship did not work out and we separated. At first he helped support us, but eventually he stopped. I started working in a factory while my mother, who suffers from diabetes and hypertension, took care of my son. Later, the factory closed and we were asked to leave our rental home, so I began working at the swap meet. A friend lent us a piece of land, and with wooden pallets we built a small room however we could. Later, my friend went through some difficulties and transferred the land to us. Little by little, I paid her back, and eventually I was able to put the property in my name. Because our home is made of pallets, wind, rain, and dust come inside very easily. We would love to improve it, but I do not have enough income to do so. It would be a great blessing if you could help us. Thank you very much.
