Letter from the family:

Hello brothers and sisters from Homes of Hope! My name is Juana Charro Marque, my husband’s name is Everardo Arzola Perez, and my children’s names are Marisol Arzola Charro and Anthony Joshua Arzola Charro. My family is originally from the state of Oaxaca but we left 4 years ago from there to Tijuana in search of a better life. Our life is much different now, in Oaxaca it was difficult to find work and my husband was battling with drugs and alcohol- it was a hard life. About 3 years ago, a wonderful family came and spoke to us about God- we learned through them that God is the only real, true Savior. My husband left behind drugs and alcohol when he learned of God’s goodness and faithfulness and we both were baptized! God reached down to us and showed us His mercy. We write to you asking for help, asking for a Home of Hope house to be built for us. The home we currently live in is very small and the roof is made out of a tarp, it’s so cold. On our own, we don’t have the resources to build a better house. My husband is the only one working and all our money goes towards our food and land payment. He works as a mason’s assistant earning $2,500 pesos a week which does not allow us to have something better. We would love the opportunity to be blessed with a home through your help. My husband, myself, and my kids would just be so grateful! My family is so excited even at the thought of possibly receiving a home- with your help and God’s, we know it is possible, we have faith. I’ll end my letter but just want to thank you and I ask God to bless you and everyone who helps build Homes of Hope houses for those who need it! God bless you, Juana.

Letter from the family:

Warm greetings to you! My motive for writing you is so that you would be able to understand a bit of our situation. I have been with my husband for 7 years and together, we have 4 children. For work, we sweep the sidewalks in Playas de Tijuana and with the little amount of items we have been given along the way- we sell those items to be able to pay for food. We were living in a home that someone let us borrow but after a few months, they asked for the home back. Because we had no money, we were forced to sleep out front of different hospitals and gas stations too. After that, we were able to find a place to stay short term while we put together money for rent. While we were looking for a place of our own, someone mentioned to us about a few properties that were for sale. We were without much hope when we went to see the properties! After speaking with the owner of the property, he told us we could start building our home there and slowly start paying him the down payment of the land- he understood our situation. Praise God, this is the story of how we now have our land! Now that I have found out about Homes of Hope, I ask you to consider giving my family a home. I want my kids to have a clean and safe place to live. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. We send you a strong hug and many blessings, all of you who are a part of the Homes of Hope team!

I live in a little wooden house that my husband built with some of his siblings. Some of the wood was given to us and some of the wood we had to purchase used. My husband works as a builder’s assistant and he earns very little. With what we earn we have just enough to purchase the food we need to eat. That is why why haven’t been able to fix up the house. Also I am unable to work because I must stay home with my children, and my brother in law and his wife live with us as well. We all sleep on the floor and in the same area where I cook and we eat. In the winter time, a lot of cold air comes into the house as it is made of a tarp. About a month ago there were very strong winds and rain, and the rain entered from all sides of the house and we were not even able to sleep. I hope that you are able to help. Thank you.

Good morning, the reason that I am writing this is because I am interested in having a home. This is because we don’t have the necessary resources to make one ourselves. My husband works and we have three beautiful children. Two years ago when my mom was still alive she was able to help us a little bit. My father died 10 months ago and he was helping us because we wanted us to have a room but then he fell ill and we spent the rest of the money that we had left on the funeral. We are asking for help because they charged us a lot, that's where I felt my world fell apart but God is big and he has never left me alone. I want to work but I can’t because my children are so small and I can’t. I have family here in Tijuana, two of my siblings, and they were able to help us since where we live is just a small room and we are crowded. Thank you and God bless you.

Truthfully, it has become very heavy for us and there are times where we cannot pay our rent but thanks to God we have been able to get by little by little. My biggest hope is to have a home that can be a place worthy of where my daughters can live and feel safe in their own home and where no one has to run from. I hope you can help us with a home. TIME IN TIJUANA: 10 years

Letter from the family:

My name is Susana Sanches, my children are Victor (12 years old) and Jesus (11 years old) and my partner Ecliserio. We live in Ejido Lázaro Cárdenas.

We’ve lived in Tijuana for 10 years, and are originally from the state of Guerrero. We came here looking for better job opportunities. In 2019 we decided it was time to have something of our own, and that’s how we acquired the land. It was quite complicated as my husband’s earnings went towards the household items and food, and to pay the rent. That’s actually how we ended up starting a small business where I made bread, and from there also learned to make cakes. From doing that I earned what was needed to pay for the land, and to also help my husband a little with the other costs we had.

All was going well, thanks to God, but in February of 2021 my husband had an accident at work. He worked taking apart pieces at a scrap yard. He was carrying a motor which caused a disc to slip in his back. It was a complete 360 turn for us, as his job did not offer health insurance and he was bed ridden for about 4 months, unable to move. After this time, he started to recover but was still unable to return to his job at the scrap yard. Of course we did not receive any support from his boss, he was only offered his job back. But per medical recommendation and the pain he consistently experienced, he was unable to return to any heavy labor work indefinitely. In September of the same year, the owners of the house we rented gave us a one month notice to move out, and I was very worried because I was the one who solely carried all of the financial responsibility at that time. I worried about finding another house to rent, and I looked for one, but they were way too expensive. At that point we connected with an old boss of my husbands to ask for a loan to build a house on our land, or at least a room. To my surprise, instead of offering us a loan, he offered to lend us a van. It was one of those school type vans or buses for transporting people that if you took the seats out, it made it habitable. The only thing left was to get it to the property, which my husband’s old boss offered to help with by using his crane. That way we would have a place to live and not be in debt.

Thanks be to God, that worked well for us, but come winter time we changed location as it was too cold for mainly my children, but also us, as the material the bus is made of is not good for the cold months. Still, we are thankful to God to be on our property and to have a place to live. Currently my husband and I both work for my business, well, now “our” business, as it’s now both of us that work in the business. And it’s because of all of that, I am sending this request for a house. Firstly, because the van we have has only been lent to us, without a definitive time frame, but still it is lent. Secondly, as I mentioned previously, my husband can no longer work and because of that we have just one income, although I do as much as I can. Thirdly, although right now it’s not as cold, in the winter I would love for my children and myself to be able to sleep protected from the cold.

Hi my name is Angelica Escobar Hernandez. I am 29 years old. I’m a single mother of a little one who is two years old, named Maximiliano García Escobar. He is my reason for fighting each day, my inspiration, my strength, my entire life. We currently live in at home with my mother, together with my two brothers. I came to live with my mother after my separation from my ex-partner. There were no rooms available for me and my son, so they accommodated me where they were going to make the laundry room. It’s small, about 7 feet by 6 feet. A single bed and a space to put our clothes is all that fits. I don’t have much space for toys for my baby. His things are in the main living room and it’s uncomfortable for me because I invade everyone else’s space. My child can’t play freely. At night he doesn’t sleep well and moves around a lot and we don’t have a lot of space and don’t fit well in the bed.

I would love and I deeply desire to be able to have a homes of hope for myself and my son. I have been dreaming for years for the day, God willing, when we live in one together.

With all my heart I ask your help to have our own home where we can live and find a better space fro my baby.

Thank you very much, and blessings.

Hello, my name is Daniel Sanchez Gutierrez. I am the father of our family, I have three children. My oldest is April, thn Evelyn, and then little Daniel. Their ages are 15, 13, and 2 years old. I also have my wife. I want to thank you in advance for following up with us and our ask for your help in receiving a home. We really need a house, especially with the economic situation the way it is because of the pandemic and other things. I haven’t been able to do much with our plot of land, and we have been living in a small room that we put a lot of effort into making, but constructed under a time crunch because where we were living before, forced us to leave at the beginning of the pandemic. We didn’t have much money or time to build where we are living now, thankfully my father-in-law was able to help us a little bit, as well as one of our cousins, but without any knowledge of construction, it is not well made and leaks a lot of water in, and lets in a lot of the cold air. It is a really hard, and small space for us to live in as a family. Especially for my daughters, who are now teenagers and need their own space. Being the only source of income for the family, I haven’t been able to build anything better for us. With our son who is 2 years old, my wife hasn’t been able to work either. However, I know God has a plan and solution for everything. I thank you guys for taking our situation and family into account. It would be a huge blessing and much help for us to receive a house, because it is very hard for us to keep living how we have been living... without space, without privacy for the girls, for the baby. Also, because we are so many, and the space is limited, we have had to have a lot of our stuff outside but a lot of it has got destroyed due to the weather and such. What also gives me a lot of fear is that there are a lot of animals living under the space where we are like rats, snakes, and it’s scary with the kids around. Because of all of this, we need a safe and better home as a family. I pray God permits us to be one of the blessed families to receive a home from you guys. Thank you so much for your consideration. God bless you.

I write this letter to you to tell you a little bit about the economic situation my family and I are going through. My husband, Carlos Daniel Reyes Covarrubias, and I have been together since October 2014. Together, we have a 5 year old son born on March 14th 2016. We were able to begin purchasing our own plot of lands July 11th 2018. My husband and I have been paying toward our plot as much as we can, even often sacrificing other things to be able to do so. For a while now, even before the pandemic, we have been struggling financially. So, I decided to go out on a limb and reach out to you guys for help, seeing if I qualified for a home. For a little bit, I was actually thinking I was going to receive a home from your guys, but then the pandemic started, and I was notified that everything was suspended temporarily. After that, we tried saving up a little bit of money to build a room-type of shelter on our plot of land to live in , but I got really sick, and wasn’t able to go to IMSS, because they were not attending people anymore due to so many cases of Covid. After going to various specialists and doing many different tests, they figured out I had 3 rocks in my gallbladder, and that was why I was so bad. To try to help with the pain, and as a treatment, they gave me painkillers, but they were very expensive. Because of this, little by little, we had to waste all of the money we had saved, on medicine. A little while later, thanks to God, IMSS granted us economic support so that I was able to have the operation that I needed. After that, I was able to return to work and was able to start helping my husband with the expenses and savings again. When we were finally getting a good rhythm, my mom Lila (who is actually my grandma, but who has raised me and is like a mom to me) got sick with Covid. She got very sick and it was very severe. She's 72 years old. Along with my husband, and uncle, we pulled together all of our resources and finances, to be able to afford all of the medications and treatments that the doctor had prescribed. Thanks to God, she beat Covid! She helps us out a lot by watching my son when I have to work. However, no matter how much we try or what we do, it feels like we have not been able to make any progress or do anything with our plot of land. My husband is working full-time as a brick maker. I was working a full-time job monday-friday, but now I am only working 3 days a week because my son’s schooling is online and he needs help with school. Because my mom is not that tech savvy, I have to be here with him to help, which means I can’t work as much as I would like, and because of that we haven’t been able to earn as much either. For the payment for our plot of land, my husband pays $131.25 dollars, which is even more for us because we get paid in pesos, have to convert the little money we have, pay rent, pay our bills for water and gas, and gasoline, and then with the little money leftover from that is all that we have to use for materials for our home… which is even less if my mom Lila, or son get sick, and we have to take them to the doctor or buy medicine or such. Actually, we don’t even have enough money monthly to cover those costs, so we have to keep asking to borrow money, sometimes from my uncle. So, right now we are renting a little house, it's a house of a family friend, and we have been living here a little while because they rent it to us for very cheap. However, it has no division, it’s just all of us all together, my mom was forced to live somewhere else, and overall it is bringing a lot of stress and division to our family. I hope we can hold onto our hope in God and our faith. Even if we don’t end up qualifying, at least we tried the best we could, and don’t have to live with the doubt of “what-if”. God bless you guys!
