MOTHER: Maria

Age: 35 years old

Job:Sells mobile phone accesories

Salary weekly: $210 US

CHILDREN:

Anderson - 12 years old

Denisse - 8 years old

Jesus - 2 years old

LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:

Dear Homes of Hope team, my name is María Fidelia Barajas, and I am a single mother of three children. On June 10, 2024, I separated from the father of my children; he left the house, and we remained living there. Shortly after, my former mother-in-law moved from Michoacán into the same house along with one of her sons and her mother. The children’s father built a wooden room upstairs where we moved, thinking that being independent it would avoid problems. However, two weeks later, after returning from an outing with him, his sister and her five children had already taken over part of the space, and little by little we were pushed out. When I took my children to visit my parents, upon returning we were no longer allowed into the room, and since then we have been living in a van my sister lent me. I sell cell phone accessories to support us, and I am asking for your help so that my children and I can have a safe and dignified roof over our heads, with beds and a table to eat at. It breaks my heart to see my children living as they are now. My son Anderson, who is nearly 12 years old and has autism, is very loving and, along with my other two children, motivates me to keep going, working hard, and spending quality time with them. I want the best for them, and I am truly grateful for your generosity.

LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:

Dear Homes of Hope team, our family is made up of four members: us, the parents, and our two daughters. We arrived in Tijuana on September 6, 2020, with the desire to build a better future. We are originally from the state of Guerrero, where we lost our jobs during the pandemic; we used to sell bags of fruit, but my mother-in-law told us about job opportunities in Tijuana, so we decided to try our luck here. At first, we rented the house where she lived, but it was later taken back, and due to high rent prices, we moved into another shared house with coworkers, though it was not very comfortable. For this reason, we saved money and bought a piece of land together with my mother, who was able to build her wooden house; we have not yet built ours, but she returned to Guerrero and lent us her home. Now, with our second daughter and my husband unemployed, we turn to you with the hope of receiving support to have a safe place for our girls. We support ourselves by selling cakes, and my husband takes on maintenance jobs, but we live with constant worry about not having a secure home. We are very grateful for your consideration, as this represents a great hope for us.

LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:

Dear Homes of Hope team, I am writing to you with the hope of finding support in the difficult situation I am currently facing. I am a single mother of two young children and am in a very vulnerable condition. Recently, I was asked to leave the place that had been lent to me for living, and I have no other place to move to, which causes me great concern for the well-being of my children. I do not have the financial means to rent a new home while also covering weekly expenses such as groceries, cleaning supplies, and school materials, and I do not have family or acquaintances who can help me at this time. For this reason, I take the liberty of reaching out to you with the hope that you may consider my case for the construction of a small home that would provide my children with a safe and stable place to live. I sincerely thank you for your time and consideration and look forward with faith to your response.

Age: 49 years old

Job: Tortillas Deliverer

Salary weekly: $124 US

CHILDREN:

Victor Gabriel - 17 years old

Isidro Ivan - 13 years old

Pablo Uriel - 10 years old

LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:

Dear Homes of Hope team, we are the Acosta Ibarra family. I, María, came to Tijuana as a child, and my children were born here. We lived in my mother’s house until, after her passing, my siblings asked me to leave. We rented for a time, but we could not continue because prices exceeded our budget of 3,000 pesos. While working in a factory, a friend told me about land for sale; we managed to save for the down payment and that is where we live now. With pallets we purchased and old wood that was given to us, we built the room we currently have. It is small and very cold, and when it rains, water leaks inside. My children are bullied because of the conditions in which we live, which pains me deeply, as I have promised them that one day they will have a dignified home. For this reason, I seek the blessing of receiving a house to fulfill that promise.

LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:

Dear Homes of Hope team, we are in need of a home because the place where we currently live is not in proper condition, as water leaks in from above. When we first arrived, some neighbors helped us build it as best they could so we wouldn’t have to sleep outside, since with what we earn we can only afford to pay for the land, utilities, and food. I work at the street market selling secondhand items that are given to me, which allows me to care for my son who needs me. We have great faith that God will help us. We sleep on two mattresses placed directly on an unpaved dirt floor, and our stove has only one working burner and leaks gas. I pray to God that you can help us with a warm and safe home to sleep in. We hope you will consider us so that our dream may come true. We have been leveling the land by hand, with great effort. Thank you very much for your attention.

Salary weekly: $145 US

FATHER: Alejandro

Age: 36 years old

Job: Salesman

Salary weekly: $135 US

CHILDREN:

Alex - 12 years old

Diana - 4 months old

LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:

Dear Homes of Hope team, over 15 years ago we met, and in 2012 we decided to get married in Santa María La Alta, Puebla, our hometown. The following year our son Alex was born. Our community is a semi-arid area and, due to lack of water, the crops in recent years failed, leading us to seek other sources of income working in tomato greenhouses, with exhausting shifts from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., just enough to cover electricity, water, and basic needs. When Alex turned two, my husband Alejandro attempted to cross into the United States, walking six days through the desert; he was detained, returned with no money and with blisters on his feet, and went back to greenhouse work. Later, Alejandro’s brother offered him a job in Tijuana selling brooms, and he moved there, visiting us only once a year. When Alex was six, we traveled to Tijuana to visit him and decided to stay, enrolling him in the elementary school in the Altiplano neighborhood where we rented. One day, we saw a lot for sale and decided to buy it. I, Laura, began working weekends at a medical products company to help with household, food, and school expenses. In September 2023 we lost a baby to miscarriage, and in March 2025 our daughter Ayleen was born. In 2023 we moved to our land and built a wooden house, but during the rainy season water leaks in through the walls and roof; in severe cold we temporarily stay with Alejandro’s brother. We hope for your support to build a dignified home where our children can grow up in better conditions. We place this hope in God’s blessing and yours.

LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:

Dear Homes of Hope team, the purpose of this letter is to request your support in obtaining a more welcoming home for my family, which consists of six members. Our resources have not been sufficient to achieve, at this time, the home we need. For this reason, and with God’s blessing through you, I take the liberty of requesting this valuable assistance. We are originally from southern Veracruz, where our hardships were even greater, and that is why we decided to undertake the long journey north in search of better opportunities and to move forward as a family. The road has been difficult, with challenges such as high rent and the elevated cost of basic necessities, which have prevented us from reaching our goal. Nevertheless, thanks to God, we have not lost hope and we trust that He will help us to the end. We are deeply grateful for the work of your organization, which has inspired us to keep believing in the Almighty. We trust that, with your infinite kindness and love for others, we may have the blessing of meeting you, believing that God has placed you in our path. My children are very excited to know that there are people sent by God to love one another. Thank you very much; we leave everything in God’s hands.

LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:

Dear Homes of Hope team, my name is Laura, and I am originally from El Salvador. I arrived in Mexico 13 years ago with my two children while pregnant, fleeing the violence in my country. In Tapachula, I stayed with a friend, as I have no family here. At first, we slept on the floor, and with God’s help, I began selling bananas, pupusas, and other items, which allowed me to rent a room. We lived in Chiapas for five years, and after saving for travel expenses, we moved to Tijuana, where I have now lived for eight years. I started by helping a woman sell goods and saved enough to make the down payment on a piece of land, which I have owned for three years. Although I sell on the street, I have managed to ensure my children attend school. Currently, it is very difficult for me to pay for the land, rent, and their education; in addition, where we live, a neighbor uses drugs, plays loud music, and does not let us sleep, which worsens my nervous tic and gives me headaches. Out of fear, we do not confront him. If I were able to have a house, I would move immediately, which would be an answer from God. My son and I have dug the foundation and leveled the land. I continue working by buying and reselling clothes, trusting that God will touch your hearts. I am grateful for all the help you give to families in need, and I pray that God blesses and multiplies your work.

LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:

May God greatly bless each of you for the efforts you make to bring joy to the families who receive a home. I am originally from Chiapas and arrived in Tijuana about eight years ago with my three children. Since then, I have worked hard to pay rent and provide for our needs. I have gone through very difficult times, including the loss of my eldest son — a pain I have not been able to overcome, but one that has motivated me to keep going for my other two children. Over time, I began attending a Christian church, where I met a man whom I later married, and together we had a daughter. He worked in a factory, and I sold clothes at the street market so I could care for my children. Through much effort, we researched how to purchase land, and with God’s help, we were able to acquire a piece and build a simple home where we currently live. Though it’s modest, it is ours. However, I am now separated and once again solely responsible for my children’s expenses. That is why I humbly ask for your support in helping us live in better conditions. I am deeply grateful to the entire Homes of Hope team for the beautiful work you do.

LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:

Dear Homes of Hope, our family is originally from Veracruz, a state where jobs are scarce and poorly paid. We went through many hardships, often going without food during times when we were out of work. When we heard about Tijuana, we decided to move there in hopes of building a better future. We arrived with no money or belongings, and life was extremely difficult — especially with the onset of the pandemic — but we never gave up. We walked the streets daily in search of work. I took the night shift so my husband could stay home and care for our children. Some kind friends offered us a small room to live in, and later, my husband’s employers generously lent us a house in Rosarito so he could be closer to his job. We then set a goal to save for a piece of land; we sold our car and I took out a work loan to pay for the down payment. With that, we built a small room and were finally able to move in. It was a huge milestone, and it also allowed our children to return to school. Today, we humbly ask for your support in helping us build a larger space for our family. We sincerely thank you for your attention and for considering our request.

We are originally from Oaxaca and moved to Tijuana in 2019 seeking better opportunities, as there was no work in our hometown. Mia Maria - 4 years old (granddaughter)

LETTER FROM THE FAMILY:

Dear Homes of Hope, my name is María Rosa, and my nightmare began the day my father and brother passed away. Since then, I have not known a single day of peace. I moved to Tijuana with my children in search of a better life, but my health began to deteriorate, and my son Ángel, at only 14 years old, had to start working. With effort, we managed to move forward, but I became ill again and was diagnosed with four cysts and high blood pressure. I pray to God to allow me to live long enough to see my children grow and fulfill their dreams. When my children, Ángel and Paola, began saving money, the three of us set a goal to buy a piece of land to build our own little house. I am getting older, now nearly 50 years old, and sometimes I feel my strength fading, but my children’s dreams give me the motivation to keep going. Ángel wants to finish high school and join the Navy. I ask for nothing for myself — only for my children, so that they may have a safe place from which to pursue their dreams. That is why I humbly ask for your support. Thank you very much.
